Southeast Asia Baijiu Market Analysis, Product Selection and Pricing

1. Conclusions

  1. First-priority region. Southeast Asia has the largest Chinese community and a concentration of Chinese-invested projects and industrial parks. Use Singapore as the regional distribution hub and serve Chinese projects in Cambodia and Laos through group purchasing.
  2. Singapore taxes are heavy; low-strength baijiu has the edge. Singapore excise is S$88 per litre of pure alcohol, about RMB 128 on a 53% 500 ml bottle, while a 30% chi or rice aroma baijiu carries only about RMB 73.
  3. Three lead products. Chi and rice aroma low-strength baijiu retails at S$45 with a distillery price cap of RMB 31, against a distillery export price of about RMB 18, the best margin of the range. The entry sauce aroma gift box retails at S$108 (cap RMB 112) and the 10-year aged sauce aroma at S$298 (cap RMB 480).
  4. Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand in phase two. Vietnam's special consumption tax rises every year, and Malaysia and Thailand have complex tax regimes that need line-by-line verification before entry.

2. Market Overview

Country Role Notes
Singapore Regional distribution hub, premium gifting Chinese majority; mature retail and on-trade channels
Cambodia, Laos Group purchasing and custom-label baijiu for Chinese projects Concentration of Chinese project staff; supplied directly against orders
Vietnam Not a priority for now Special consumption tax keeps rising
Malaysia, Thailand Phase two Heavy and complex spirits taxes

Competition: Luzhou Laojiao has grown sales volume in Southeast Asia by more than 25% for three consecutive years; Zhenjiu says it will consolidate its position in Southeast Asia; Moutai is title sponsor of the Singapore Open; in May 2024 the "Guizhou Baijiu Global Tour" took Moutai, Xijiu, Zhenjiu and Guotai to Singapore. National brands already hold the premium tier, while the mid-to-low price tiers and low-strength baijiu still have room.

3. Taxes and Import Requirements

Country Key tax points
Singapore No customs duty on spirits; excise S$88 per litre of pure alcohol; GST 9%
Vietnam Special consumption tax on spirits at 20% ABV or above: 65% in 2026, rising each year to 90% in 2031; beverages below 20% rise from 35% to 60%
Cambodia, Laos Lower tax burden than Singapore; Chinese project orders are quoted on actual clearance costs
Malaysia, Thailand Ad valorem and specific taxes combined; verify item by item before entry

4. Product Selection and Pricing (Singapore)

Product Recommended retail price RMB equivalent Excise (RMB) Target FOB (RMB) Distillery price cap (RMB)
Entry sauce aroma gift box, 53%, 500 ml S$108 594 128 154 112
Light aroma bottle, 42%, 500 ml S$55 302 102 40 29
Chi and rice aroma low-strength, 30%, 500 ml S$45 248 73 43 31
Sauce aroma tasting set, 4 × 100 ml, 53% S$69 380 103 77 56
10-year aged sauce aroma, 53%, 500 ml S$298 1,639 132 657 480

Chinese projects in Cambodia and Laos: custom-label strong aroma baijiu is quoted per order and does not go through the Singapore retail chain. At a distillery export price of about RMB 50 and a 27% exporter margin, the FOB price is about RMB 68.

5. FOB Back-Calculation Method

FOB = Retail price ÷ (1 + GST) × (1 − retailer margin) × (1 − importer margin) × exchange rate − excise − freight and insurance

Assumption Value
Retailer margin 30%
Importer margin 25%
Freight and insurance RMB 4 per bottle; RMB 3 per tasting set
Exchange rate S$1 = RMB 5.5
Exporter margin 27%; distillery price cap = FOB × 0.73

6. Risks and Responses

Risk Response
Vietnam's special consumption tax rises every year Not a priority; focus on Singapore, Cambodia and Laos
National brands entrenched in Singapore's premium tier Avoid head-on premium competition; lead with low-strength baijiu and entry sauce aroma
Irregular orders from projects in Cambodia and Laos Build long-term supply relationships with multiple Chinese projects and chambers of commerce
